While we never want to think the worst can happen, we\u2019ve all witnessed how unpredictable the world can be. Though many of us have been fortunate to stay shielded from whatever the elements can bring, in the back of our minds we all know that an emergency can strike at any moment. So if you\u2019re living in Vancouver luxury condos or a townhome community, when the unexpected occurs, just how prepared are you?<\/p>\n

From May 7th to 13th, Emergency Preparedness Week<\/a> in Canada is in full swing, bringing attention to an important issue on a national scale. Since its inception in 1996, this initiative is all about encouraging Canadians to take three simple steps in order to become better prepared when faced with any type of emergency.<\/p>\n

  1. <\/u>Know the Risks<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    From downtown Vancouver condos to detached homes, we\u2019re all susceptible to hazards. From earthquakes to floods to power outages, get to know the threats in your region to learn what supplies and tactics you\u2019ll need to avoid immediate danger.<\/p>\n

    1. <\/u>Make a Plan<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      What would happen if your family wasn\u2019t together and there wasn\u2019t any cell reception? Being separated from your loved ones without any way of contacting them is one of the scariest situations a family can go through. That\u2019s why you should have an emergency plan in place so everyone knows what to do if a disaster should occur. You can easily make one online<\/a>, just remember to discuss the steps with your family at least once every three months so no one forgets.<\/p>\n

      1. Get a Kit<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        If the power\u2019s out and you\u2019re without heat and hot water, you\u2019ll need basic supplies to survive. Create an Emergency Kit that\u2019s filled with items that will allow you to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Water, a battery-operated or wind-up flashlight, and non-perishable food items should be at the top of your list, as well as a blanket, warm clothing, and a first-aid kit. If you have a member of the family that requires medication, ensure to include these items as well. Just make sure to store the kit in a spot that’s easy to access, and always be sure to double check the expiry dates.<\/p>\n
